About me

I'm James E. Gentile. I build small, private software, and before that I spent a decade in research: agent-based models of malaria mosquitoes and economies, circadian biology, and iris and face biometrics. The apps on this site are the current chapter. The record below is the earlier ones.

Research replicability assessment

US 12,118,311 B1 · Issued October 15, 2024

A machine learning approach for evaluating the replicability of research receives a scholarly paper or publication about a research effort, and applies learning models and natural language processing to identify replicability of the asserted results. Rule-based and machine learning approaches employ models based on preexisting research papers having defined replicability, and compare language features, research parameters and factual assertions extracted from a research paper for evaluation. A pipeline of evaluations and feature extraction analyzes the content of the research paper and renders a prediction value that the described research can be repeated with similar results.

System and method for generating and employing short length iris codes

US 9,483,696 · Issued November 1, 2016

A system and method for generating compact iris representations based on a database of iris images includes providing full-length iris codes for iris images in a database, where the full-length iris code includes a plurality of portions corresponding to circumferential rings in an associated iris image. Genuine and imposter score distributions are computed for the full-length iris codes, and code portions are identified that have a contribution that provides separation between imposter and genuine distributions relative to a threshold. A correlation between remaining code portions is measured. A subset of code portions having low correlations within the subset is generated to produce a compact iris representation.

Iris recognition system and method

US 8,452,131 · Issued May 28, 2013

A system and method for performing an identity search in a database of iris images for a probe iris image includes generating a full-length iris code and a compact iris code for iris images in a database, and generating a full-length iris code and a compact iris code for a probe iris image. The compact iris code for the probe image is scored against all compact iris codes in the database. A fraction of the database is retained based on score data. The full-length iris code for the probe image is scored against all the full-length iris codes in the retained portion of the database.

  1. Getting the Best of Both Worlds? Developing Complementary Equation-Based and Agent-Based ModelsComputational Economics · November 2017

We argue that building agent-based and equation-based versions of the same theoretical model is a fruitful way of gaining insights into real-world phenomena. We use the epistemological concept of "models as isolations and surrogate systems" as the philosophical underpinning of this argument. In particular, we show that agent-based and equation-based approaches align well when used simultaneously and, contrary to some common misconceptions, should be considered complements rather than substitutes. We illustrate the usefulness of the approach by examining a model of the long run relationship between economic development and inequality (i.e., the Kuznets hypothesis).

  1. Daily Rhythms in Mosquitoes and Their Consequences for Malaria TransmissionInsects · April 2016

The 24-h day involves cycles in environmental factors that impact organismal fitness. This is thought to select for organisms to regulate their temporal biology accordingly, through circadian and diel rhythms. In addition to rhythms in abiotic factors (such as light and temperature), biotic factors, including ecological interactions, also follow daily cycles. How daily rhythms shape, and are shaped by, interactions between organisms is poorly understood. Here, we review an emerging area, namely the causes and consequences of daily rhythms in the interactions between vectors, their hosts and the parasites they transmit. We focus on mosquitoes, malaria parasites and vertebrate hosts, because this system offers the opportunity to integrate from genetic and molecular mechanisms to population dynamics and because disrupting rhythms offers a novel avenue for disease control.

  1. Modelling sterile insect technique to control the population of Anopheles gambiaeMalaria Journal · February 2015

There is a renewed effort to develop novel malaria control strategies as even well-implemented existing malaria control tools may fail to block transmission in some regions. Currently, transgenic implementations of the sterile insect technique (SIT) such as the release of insects with a dominant lethal, homing endonuclease genes, or flightless mosquitoes are in development. These implementations involve the release of transgenic male mosquitoes whose matings with wild females produce either no viable offspring or no female offspring. As these technologies are all in their infancy, little is known about the relative efficiencies of the various implementations.

  1. An agent-based model of the population dynamics of Anopheles gambiaeMalaria Journal · November 2014

Agent-based models (ABMs) have been used to model the behaviour of individual mosquitoes and other aspects of malaria. In this paper, a conceptual entomological model of the population dynamics of Anopheles gambiae and the agent-based implementations derived from it are described. Hypothetical vector control interventions (HVCIs) are implemented to target specific activities in the mosquito life cycle, and their impacts are evaluated.

  1. Extensive circadian and light regulation of the transcriptome in the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiaeBMC Genomics · April 2013

Mosquitoes exhibit 24 hr rhythms in flight activity, feeding, reproduction and development. To better understand the molecular basis for these rhythms in the nocturnal malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, we have utilized microarray analysis on time-of-day specific collections of mosquitoes over 48 hr to explore the coregulation of gene expression rhythms by the circadian clock and light, and compare these with the 24 hr rhythmic gene expression in the diurnal Aedes aegypti dengue vector mosquito.

  1. Verifying agent-based models with steady-state analysisComputational and Mathematical Organization Theory · December 2012

Agent-based modeling has been well received in the simulation community. Complex systems are simulated by many autonomous agents whose behavior is defined by a conceptual model. However, the model can be improperly implemented or misinterpreted resulting in an implementation that does not reflect the conceptual rules. It is imperative that the implementation's function be tested against the model's expected outcome. In this paper, we present certain steady-state techniques that can be used to verify the operation of agent-based simulations. These methods are introduced and then applied to an ecological model which simulates reproductive dynamics of mosquitoes.
